Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he liked participating in different card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in these card games while playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a bit and moved away to New York City to participate in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he would play extensive hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he possibly could boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus even more on poker.
The definite improvement in his abilities happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would frequently challenge one another. Howard was able to access some of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking skills. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of No-Limit holdem.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. She was a superb student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the best female players the poker world today. Howard headed to Sin City in 1993 and participated in money games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
