While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he would play many hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he might improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and concentrate even more on the game.

The real improvement in his abilities began when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly challenge each other. Howard had access into a few of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his cunning thinking skills. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. She was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the best women players the poker world ever. Howard headed to Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the successive 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
